Finland

Land of a Thousand Lakes thrills fans of natural beauty from around the world.

Republic of Finland covers an area of approximately 338 000 square kilometers in northeastern Europe. This Scandinavian and Baltic state borders with Sweden, Norway and Russia, and has access to the Baltic Sea, Finland Gulf and the Gulf of Bothnia. Under its authority are the Aland Islands along the southwest coast, which in turn have an autonomous status.

Geographically, the state is divided into three sections: Lapon Finland, lake Finland, and the coast.

Most of the Finland is covered with plains, and its biggest natural resource is forests that occupy 72 percent of the national territory. Unsurprisingly, processing of wood and producing paper and furniture are its largest industries.

The country has about 5 million inhabitants, and most of them are Finns. The main town and port – Helsinki – is situated on the shore of the Gulf of Finland in the south. Its wide area includes the cities of Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen where more than a million inhabitants live. It is considered the economic center of the country, and one of the most developed cities in the world.

Finnish cuisine is based on a healthy diet and seasons. Here they like to eat grains, seafood, and traditional meat products like sausages with the addition of raisins, onions, flour and even pine bark. Finns, however, love the crabs – whose hunting season begins in June. With meals they drink milk, local beer, Finnish vodka (Koss), and Mead.
