A Piece of Fashion History

A White Himalayan Niloticus Crocodile Diamond Birkin was recently auctioned for a record-breaking $300,168 at the Christie’s 30th Asia anniversary in Hong Kong, making it the most valuable handbag ever sold. The elusive Birkin has a reputation for being notoriously difficult to track down, eliciting staggering waiting lists and exceptional price points. As the rarest model on this spectrum, the Diamond Himalaya is arguably the most desirable handbag in the world.

Each bag is crafted from Niloticus crocodile hide using a highly laborious dyeing process that takes many hours to complete. The outcome is a subtle white and grey colouration evocative of the snow-capped Himalayan mountains. 18-karat white gold and diamond hardware adds the finishing touch.

It is believed that only one or two of the Diamond Himalayas are produced globally each year, making it one of the lowest production runs for handbags in the world.

Birkins have climbed in value by 500 percent in the last 35 years, an increase expected to double in the next 10 years. According to a recent study, the purchase of a Birkin has proven to be a safer investment than gold or stock market shares.
