Obertauern is one of the snowiest ski areas in Austria and offers numerous attractions for all winter sports lovers, excellent accommodation and skiing experiences that will be recounted until next winter.

What is so attractive about Obertauern, located in the wonderful alpine landscape and what is the formula for success, we found out from the top people of the tourist board, director mag.iur. Maier Mona and director Siedler Maria.

W: What sets Obertauern apart from other Austrian ski resorts and why does it not come off the list of one of the best ski resorts in Europe?
Obertauern is one of the most popular ski resorts in Europe as it is one of the highest and therefore we are the absolut No.1 when it comes to the snow-safety.
No other resort is having more average snowfall than Obertauern. But also the convenience of having a 100% ski-in/ski-out from every hotel in the resort is highly appreciated by our guests.

W: Ivica Kostelić really likes to ski on the ski slopes of Obertauern. However, it is also known that your tourist board cooperates very well with him. How did this collaboration come about and why did you choose this particular Croatian skier for promotion?
Ivica Kostelic has been in Obertauern for training as a very young athlete on his way to the World Cup. By that time he did not yet think about the skiing possibilities beside racing. Now, after his successful carreer, he came back in 2022 for the reason that Obertauern has been the almost only resort that was able to offer good snow conditions in the alps.

He got to know Obertauern and now we think he loves it. We thought that it is a good idea to start a collaboration with the – as we would call it “all time skiing hero” of Croatia. We are supporting him mainly with the shootings and production of his upcoming skiing movie.

W: Can you describe the main characteristics of the ski slopes and terrain configuration?
The slopes in Obertauern are various. Fact is that we have about 90 percent blue and red runs and about 10 percent black. All together about 100km. But the big + on top is that we can offer minimum the same range of freeride possibilities.

W: Lately, you are one of the few places where there is always enough snow. Does this mean a greater number of skiers on the slopes and even greater tourism development from hotels, restaurants and other service industries?
As we do have these perfect snow conditions we have a positive booking situation throughout the whole season from November to May. It doesn’t mean that it is more crowded or that there are big plans to extend the resort or area.

Due to the natural situation Obertauern will not get that much bigger regarding the number of beds or hotels. We are surrounded by an area of natural retreatment areas as well as restricted areas for new investments (also for safety reasons – regarding avalanche zones). There are approx. 10000 guest beds and there will not be that many more. Local businesses are investing in quality and not quantity.

W: Austria is known for year-round tourist visits. What does Obertauern have to offer in non-ski season?
Beside the winter season Obertauern has a small but fine summer season especially for hikers, bikers, nature lovers. The summer season is very short though. Only the months of middle of june to middle of September can be used for summer holidays.

W: This ski resort also stands out as family friendly? What contributes to such an attribute?
Families in Obertauern are more than welcome. Especially the easy slopes, the terrain which is perfect for kids, easy, sunny, relaxed atmosphere – combined with the service of 5 ski-schools and several fun zones for kids are the main decision criteria for a family holiday in Obertauern.

W: What other activities in the snow, apart from sledding, can be tried at your ski resort?
Imagin all types of winter sports – that’s all possible in Obertauern.
From cross-country, to biathlon, from tobboganing to winter hiking, ice climbing, snowkiting, horse sleigh rides, skitouring.
Think of something – we have it.

W: Apart from the ski and snowboard slopes, what are the attractions of Obertauern that visitors can see?
Beside Wintersports it is the quality of life in Obertauern that attracts the clients. 99% have never seen that much snow. It feels like being in a fantasy world. Several historical places can also be seen like the Beatles monuments as well as the historic picture gallery or the roman artefacts from the ancient road through Obertauern..

W: And finally, one more important question for skiers and visitors of Obertauern ????
What is the nightlife like in Obertauern, what is the best to eat and what to sweeten, and what should be tasted from your fine wines?
Obertauern and Apres-Ski – no more words needed! That is something that goes together for a long time. People really like to party in Obertauern as you do not need your car anymore after having a couple of drinks. There is a huge variety of huts, bars, restaurant, indoor- and outdoor locations for every taste.

One can say that one particular place is the best. It´s all about your individual feeling, but there is something for everybody.
But never forget to have a Wiener Schnitzel and a Kaiserschmarren with a good glass of Austrian wine and a high quality “Schnaps” as digestif.

Oğuz Aydemir shows with great clearly that the history is in the foundation of every culture, nation and individual in the monography “Traces of Ottoman Culture in Croatia” in which he characterise and describe events that have had a direct impact on the people and culture at all levels.

Mr. Aydemir is long life entrepreneur and his socially awareness and activity in the community has been recognized in many areas. Mr. Aydemir is member of numerous non-profit organizations that actively contributes in the field of philanthropy and social responsibility.

W: How did you develop passion for study of history and culture?
Actually my passion for history and culture has always been somehow a side interest besides my very active business life in industry; a hobby to balance my life and a long term satisfaction of keeping busy. The total quality management understanding of running business also complimented the social responsibility aspect by this passion. Restoration of an old amphitheatre with thousand seats, museum formed for a well known artist painter, erecting a statute of a hero of independence, publishing prestigious books multilingual, sponsoring classic music concerts or even patronage of tribute George Gershwin concerts in Istanbul, organizing Sultan Suleiman’s mapmaker Piri Reis exhibitions in Croatia and a whole list of others are all samples of leaving footsteps behind for future.

W: What was your main motivation for publishing the monography “Traces of Ottoman Culture in Croatia”?
The Traces of Ottoman culture in Croatia (Tragovi osmanske kulture u Hrvatskoj) monograph is merely a result of quest for trying to learn the common heritage we have had in the past. While travelling within Croatia, I have seen many tangible Ottoman artefacts where information was very limited and scattered in different sources where a concise collection of them all did hardly exist. My initiative was simply to put together all what I could gather both tangible and intangible and at least even with a non-academic book. I am sure better and more concise ones will follow. Every time I am informed with a new finding of an old Ottoman structure, I feel more of strong ties existing between Croatians and Turks; likewise, learning a new common word still in use after many centuries makes me very excited.

W: Can we examine and gain new knowledge of history through these kind of projects?
Historical events of the past are being celebrated in many parts of the world today; Trafalgar, Waterloo, Anzac are some from the many where both parties make it a common strong tie from the past. Similar events are also being practised in Croatia but one sided like for example Picokijada. All of these anniversaries can attract Turkish people as well and give an opportunity to share the common heritage of many centuries. A very civilized gathering in Sinj – Sinjska alka and many others could be perfect examples of our strong connections for the future generations. The fact that during 16th century Croatian was spoken at the high Ottoman court with no translators is another forgotten aspect of the historical relations of two nations.

W: In which filed Ottoman culture left the strongest impact? Was it in language, architecture, culinary arts or something else?
Impact of Ottoman culture today is most experienced with Turkish words still in use. Others are also important maybe, but even after centuries to have words in use is very noticeable.

W: Can you describe the official relations between Croatia and turkey?
Official relations of the two nations is a special chapter of which I may not be the right address to comment but to my knowledge from the Independence day up to now Turkey was and has always been very close to Croatia.

W: Organization in which you are active are sponsors in many research projects. Can you tell us something about that projects?
Being the President of Turkish Underwater Archaeology Foundation and Director at Institute of Nautical Archaeology in Texas A&M University, we are running projects with many university students. Sometimes with patronage or sponsorship activities we support students with language courses, post graduate education opportunities, excavation or survey studies, publications ,lectures etc. We strongly believe in young generations and try to offer all sorts of opportunities for future in our field of interest.

Her Royal Highness Princess Brigitta Karadjordjevic separated some of her time, full of work commitments, to describe how she found herself in the world of high fashion. She design clothes from the finest materials for many of world renowned persons. She spent a large portion of her time with the her husband, Prince Vladimir Karadjordjevic with whom she founded the charity organisation “Mother and Child Relief Foundation”. She is very noble person, selflessly engage in all crisis situations when people are in need. We also found out some interesting details about the foods she likes to eat with her family, how she spent her childhood in Germany and special impressions from Slovenia.

W: Could you briefly introduce yourself to our readers? How do you see yourself with your own eyes?
I am Brigitta Karadjordjevic, married to HRH Prince Vladimir Karadjordjevic, the eldest son of the late Kraljevic Andrej. I was born in a small town in the middle of Germany and I was truly blessed in having been born into a wonderful and loving family. I am an only child and therefore I would say that as a child I enjoyed the total love and dedication of my parents and grandparents. Proudly, I can say that as loving as my parents were they were also very strict and insisted upon a code of good manners, Etiquette, honest work and style. This has been a tremendous advantage to me throughout my life, to this very day. Having said all this I also possess a rebellious streak, which often caused concern to my parents whilst I was still a child.

Sadly I lost all Grandparents and also my father by the time I was at the end of my teens. Many people would rightly say, how lucky I was to have those golden years, and they would be correct to say this, the years I had together with my grandparents and my father were golden years. My parents wanted me to enter the world of Investment Banking and although I knew that my vocation in life was fashion I did in fact join the Banking world and became a qualified banker, if only for a short time. After my short career with the bank it did not take long before I fulfilled my childhood dream of becoming a Fashion Designer in the world of high Couture. As with most Businesses, it was very hard at the beginning but as my client base grew and my reputation became more known to those woman who insist on nothing less than the best, my business grew steadily, almost by itself. Today I am very proud to continue to dress my clients in the finest Fashion of the highest quality and the greatest reward for me is to hear how much a client enjoys my creations. Whilst work is the provider of our daily bread, as it is for so many people, I am so grateful to be able to juggle my timetable in order to allow me to partake in other activities, such as our Charity work, our official engagements and even a little bit of painting. I would say that I see myself as blessed by God in being given the opportunity as a human being to be creative, very hard working, a person who believes in and fights for justice and rightoussnouses and given the ability to love animals almost as much as I love people.

W: How did you get involved with the world of high fashion?
From as far back into my childhood as I can remember I was fascinating by certain cloths and the materials from which they were made. I cannot explain how or why but even at a very young age I could tell good quality materials from bad quality materials. I could look at a dress or a costume on a woman’s body and see if it is was well cut and if it fit perfectly or if it was not in order. Whilst I was still a very young girl I also remember making my own dresses for my dolls and although they were very primitive and the work of a primary school imagination I believe this was the beginning of my present day career. My parents would have preferred it if my love for fashion was just a teenage interest or hobby and therefore they did not take it very seriously to begin with. Instead I was directed into the world of Investment Banking and I joined a very large German Bank and did in fact become a successful and qualified banker. Although I have never regretted this as it gave me an enormous amount of Financial Knowledge, which has helped me in my business immensely, it did not take long before I left the Banking World and opened my own Atelier, which I shared at first with a fellow Designer. After a while we saw that our interests and directions in fashion did not meet in the middle and, as friends, we severed our business ties.

This was the time I began my solo career and had already firmly set my path along the world of high or Haute Couture. At first I was lucky enough to bid for the costumes and private wardrobe of one or two artists in the world of music and theater. Because my business has always been based heavily upon word of mouth it did not take long before my client base grew and included some well known professionals and a film star. Quite early on in my Solo career I made it a point to go to Paris twice a year for the Haute Couture Fashion Shows in Order to keep up with the trends and meet up with a number of my colleagues. I have always had a soft spot for certain designers, such as Valentino, Lagerfeld and Gian Franco Ferre, and over the years I was very pleased to have had the opportunity to chat with these great people and to exchange opinions. Another avenue I insisted upon following was the direct relationships with the great names in the Haute Couture material manufactures. I refused to entertain a lower quality of materials than the best that is available for each season. For this reason I can dress my clients in the highest quality of Haute Couture materials which are produced by the same firms for the great names in the Paris Haute Couture Fashion Shows. This is a great advantage. From the very beginning of my career I was prepared to lose any potential business by not adopting an open advertising formula. In other words I will never use the names of my clients in order to promote my business in seeking new clientele. Discretion is an enormous part of my business and therefore I am more than just delighted when a new client comes to me, who has been recommended by another client of mine.

W: You always look extremely elegant. Can you reveal which fashion creators or houses You like the most? Or do you wear your own designed clothes?
As I mentioned, I do have some favourites in the world of designers and I admire their creations with a very open heart but in truth I would say that perhaps 90% to 95% of what I wear is my own creation. Without trying to belittle anybody, I do this because I can then be 100% sure that what I wear is of the quality that I insist upon for my clients, as well as for me.

W: Who are your clients and can you share a beautiful story about your fashion design, that you are especially impressed with?
As I have also mentioned, absolute discretion is a golden role in my career. Although some of my clients do not mind, and would never mind, if I use their names for promotion I have chosen to apply this rule of absolute discretion across my entire client base. I am very lucky and extremely privilege to be able to say that I dress ladies from many walks in life, who all share the desire to dress in the finest materials and enjoy the highest quality of work. From busy royals to the humble lady in the office, I am truly grateful for having a wide spectrum of clients. Some of these ladies come to me with a definite idea of what they want whilst other ladies trust my ability to look at them and know exactly what will suit their style. I am very proud of all my many creations and it is difficult for me to pick out just one or two of my creations as favourites, but I must say that I was extremely proud of dressing a well known celebrity for her wedding, who wanted to get away from the traditional white wedding dress and for whom I created an Indian outfit, which included a long skirt of many semi precious stones. I had this piece made for me personally in India, through my contacts, which took over 520 man hours to complete. Even I must boast and say that this was a dream come true for my client.

W: You also work hard in the humanitarian field. Can you specified what kind of engagement you do?
Yes, together with my husband and a small group of friends I set up our charity organization, Mother and Child Relief Foundation, in 1999. I had been working in the field of humanitarian aid since the wars broke out in Croatia and Bosnia. I felt it my duty to help those peoples suffering from the devastating effects of the wars. When my husband and I set up our organization we made a charter which dictated that our humanitarian efforts would benefit as many people who needed aid and we would not be dictated to by race, religion or ethnic background. For us, a victim, or a person in need, has no humanitarian borders. They are human beings in need of help and it is our duty to do what we can to deliver that help. I am very proud that we held firm to this principle and still do so today. Our charity is not anything in the frame of one of the big international organizations but we have been able to respond to a very large variety of needs over the years. Although our main theme is, of course, Mothers and Children, we are able to widen our scope on several occasions. We have been involved in all sorts of projects, from the normal duties of delivering medicines and equipment to hospitals, right through to the financial aid given to certain families in order to help them build their lives after the recent floods. No project is too small and therefore we have been able to achieve many successes in cases where other charities would not have had this ability. Whilst on one day we might send a child abroad for surgery, on another day we might supply a family of refugees with the basic monthly items needed for hygiene and daily survival – it very much depends upon our financial situation too.

Prince Vladimir and I try as much as possible not “advertise” our humanitarian work. We concentrate more on attempting to advertise our Humanitarian Organization and the multitude of needs of the peoples. Humanitarian work is not a popularity contest in which you are always looking for praise and medals of reward for your work. For us it is an honour to be able to help other who are in need when we can and we do not want or need any praise for it and that is why we do not make a big advertising campaign about our personal work in the humanitarian field!

W: Is the UK still strictly divided into classes according to socialising, especially when it comes to the Royal family, and do your family have meetings with them?
As I was not born or brought up in the UK I cannot really answer this question in any broad manner. I can only tell you what I have personally seen and experienced though! I would say that in the past few decades many of the old and classic walls between various classes in the UK have diminished in size and relevance. Of course, some of these barriers very much still do exist but due to a vast amount of reasons, many of these are becoming harder to identify. Prince Vladimir and I are very open people and do not base a person’s worth upon the social class from which they originate. We choose to spend our time, both private and professional, with people who possess the qualities in life that we appreciate, such as honesty and acceptance of the values of human rights. For Prince Vladimir and I, mixing, socializing and working with peoples from all walks of life and social backgrounds is an essential part of our daily life! I cannot accept that a human being is shut out of an opportunity in life based upon their social standing! This is something from the arcane past for me! I am happy to say that when it comes to the British Royal Family, the Karadjordjevic Family has very good ties and relations, but of course much of this stems from the fact that the two families are very closely related on many different family levels.

W: You have your Facebook page. How did you decide to take this step and what is your main goal with it?
Yes indeed! We have several pages on FaceBook as well as our profiles. The world of social media is truly a magnificent arena in which to present your persona, activities and goals. But, it is also a potentially very dangerous place, which can often be abused by other in many different ways, including skillful hackers. Although we have a website, I have chosen to use FaceBook as a means of communication with a large group of the public as it is a much more direct way for me to interact with the many people and keep our current news constantly up to date with very little effort. The other difference between a website and FaceBook is the manner in which information is delivered. It is so easy to upload information on FaceBook without the need for me to control a Website or to know any code. I believe that today a Website works very well in conjunction with the social media platforms by using a platform like FaceBook as a promotional basis for the website!

W: Do you travel a lot and what is your favourite country which you visited as tourist?
I am very lucky that I have travelled as a tourist very much in the past and I have seen many wonderful countries and sights as a tourist. Since I married my husband we have only been on one or two holidays and since 2003 we have only ever travelled for business or for other official engagements. We actually travel for business more now that I used to travel for private reasons before. The only downside to this is that we cannot plan any free time as we could before. This does not mean that we do not get a chance to see the sights, but we must use all available free time without actually planning for this in-between our business and other official commitments. A typical example of this was in Australia. We had six official engagements from Brisbane to the Gold Coast and then we had three days free before another three engagements in Sydney, so we hired a car and slowly drove from the Gold Coast to Sydney and were able to fully enjoy the sights in the time we had free! It is very difficult for me to say what is a favourite country that I have visited as there is so much that goes into what makes a country special. I must be honest and say that I love the places in Serbia that I have had the chance to see but the same is true in Slovenia. Sadly, we have not had the opportunity to see much of Croatia, except for a business trip to Zagreb and a drive through the beautiful town of Opatija. It would be great to see more of the country when we have the chance. I would say that until now I have no favourite as I take the best from each country as my memory and there is still so much to see!

W: You have nice cooperation with Mr. Nani Poljanec, founder of Kunsthaus museum, in Rogaška Slatina. How did you started with this cooperation?
Mr. Nani Poljanec is a wonderful person. Prince Vladimir and I are so proud of what he has achieved, almost single handed. His museum in Rogaska Slatina has the biggest single collection of Karadjordjevic exhibits in the world and Mr. Poljanec has had to personally secure many of these items with his own personal funds. Prince Vladimir met Mr. Poljanec many years before I had the pleasure of meeting him and I was very delighted and honoured when he invited my husband and me to be his special guests in the lovely town of Rogaska Slatina, where he arranged for us to stay at the very hotel where my husband’s late grandfather, King Aleksandar I, also stayed. We hope very much in the future to have the chance to closer support the work of Mr. Poljanec and to maybe expand the museum on an international scale.

W: What kind of food specialities do you like the most and do you prepare meals for you and your spouse Prince Vladimir?
This is a very good question because I have changed my own diet quite extremely in the last year and a half. I have slowly cut out all meat from my diet and tend to lean more and more towards the Vegan influence, although I still enjoy milk in my coffee and will still eat fish if it is served to me. Prince Vladimir still enjoys very traditional meat dishes, especially from the Balkan and Asian kitchens. We try to plan our meals very carefully but because of the pressures of our daily work schedules, it is often difficult and so we must be able to adapt very quickly. Of course this is easier for my husband in some cases but I am usually always able to prepare a wonderful meal for myself in the very versatile Vegan kitchen!

W: In which country do you like best to stay, native Germany, the UK or perhaps Serbia?
At the moment this is not actually a choice for us. Like the vast majority of others, we must work very hard for our daily bread and so our work actually dictates where we must operate from to a large extent. It has long been our wish to move our businesses to Serbia and to set up our living base from there but it is just not possible at the moment for a multitude of reasons and therefore my own firm is still operating from Germany and the UK. In the ideal world I would love to be able to rotate throughout the year and enjoy living in Serbia, UK and maybe Germany.

What are pop-up cards and how they are produced, find out from respected Peter Dahmen, a famous graphic designer from Germany.

Peter Dahmen is a graphic designer from Germany who is making beautiful pop-up cards. Paper structures are reaching incredible levels – from far-reaching architectural sculptures to pretty naturals appearances. Specializing in pop up sculptures his work tends to be designed as single, unique pieces utilising great attention to detail to create a masterpiece.

W: To begin with, please introduce us about your work and tell us when did you first became interested in pop-up?

I remember, that I always loved to create things from paper and cardboard, even since I was a child. But it was in the year 1989, during my design studies, when we had the task to create three dimensional objects from paper and cardboard – that I had the problem, how to transport my huge architectural structures to the university. So I decided to create 3D artworks that are foldable – to make them easier to transport. Since then, I create pop up sculptures.

W: Did you have any formal education for this kind of art?

I had no teacher for this kind of art. When I started to create pop up cards, there was no such thing like the internet! But I got a lot of inspiration through some pop up books that I knew from the bookstore – but I did not own a pop up book at that time. So I taught myself to create pop up structures – through hours and hours of personal experience, by trial and error.

W: How long have you been making pop-up sculptures and pop up cards?

I create pop up cards since about 24 years now.

W: What are the most usual themes that can be found in your art?

In my personal artworks, I am mostly interested in architectural themes. It is not my aim, to create “real” buildings, I also like abstract objects which have a certain rhythm, or a repeating pattern. When I work for commercial projects (for clients), the motifs can be nearly everything – from a restaurant scene to a football stadium.

W: What kind of paper do you use for sculptures?

It always depends on the effect, that I want to achieve: For soft things e.g. the wings of a butterfly or the petals of a flower, I use soft paper (e.g. drawing paper) with a weight between 120 g/m2 and 190 g/m2, but when I create architectonical motifs or abstract scenes, I use stronger cardboard (card stock) with a weight up to 340 g/m2. For the backing sheets, I use really strong cardboard with a weight up to 900 g/m2. I like to use offset printing paper (and cardboard) which is also used by offset printing companies – but I don’t think, that you really need a certain paper to create beautiful paper artworks. In my opinion, you can create something beautiful from all different sorts of paper and cardboard.

W: And what about the colour of the paper. How much are the colors important for a pop-up sculpture?

When I create my personal artworks – which are usually created to be single, unique pieces, I prefer to make them in white, or at least with only a few colors. I think, that the form, the structure and the movement are the most important aspects in my kind of art – and color would only distract the view.

When I am working for clients, I usually have to keep in mind, that the pop up cards have to be produced in a large edition (1.000 – 2.000 cards or even more more). Therefore, the cards can only be constructed of very few pieces. In such cases, it is often a good idea to add colorful illustrations – so I don’t need to create the whole structure only through cutted lines and folding lines. Let me give you an example: When I create a pop up card which shows a building with many windows, they would have to be cut out piece by piece – if the pop up card would be completely made from white paper. It would not be a problem, if the pop up sculpture was a single piece. But if the card is a prototype for the serial production, it is a better idea, to add an illustration which shows all the windows – so they don’t have to be cut out in the serial production (which would make the production very expensive).

W: What would you say, how much time do you need for only one single idea?

There is no general answer to this question. It depends on the complexity of the motif. Sometimes, I create a new pop up card design within one single day – but usually, I need several days until every detail fits properly. Sometimes, I work more than 10 days to create a single pop up sculpture. When I design a new 3D object, I start with the creation of very easy models. During the designing process, the next models become more and more complex. Sometimes I have a certain idea, which forces me to solve several problems. Then I often need several attempts – and a lot of trial and error – until I know how I have to build the final pop up sculpture.

W: Is there anything about your process or way of working that you think is unusual or unique?

I don’t know, if it is possible, to create a new pop up card design only by thinking about it, or by the use of a computer – without doing it with your own hands. Maybe some people can design things in that way – but I like to work with the real materials. My first prototypes and sketches are always made by hand. Paper does not always react in the way, that you are expecting, and so it is a good idea, to try things in reality. I think, that it is necessary to play around and to try out different solutions to achieve new ideas. But I don’t think, that this kind of working process is unique or special.

W: Do you feel that the public understands your work?

There is no “statement” or “message” in my artworks, which has to be understood by the audience. I know, that every viewer has his personal thought upon each of my sculptures. People associate different things, when they look at my abstract artworks – and I like it that way! That’s the reason, why most of my paper artworks are untitled. Even if one person may say, that a certain pop up sculpture reminds him or her of a certain building – I would never say that this is right or wrong. If they can see it – it must be there. Even if I did not intend to make each of my pop up sculptures look like “real things” from nature or architecture, many people still look at my sculptures as if they were models of “real things”. I think, that’s OK!

W: Since festive days has overpast, did you prepare something special for Christmas?

I already have prepared something: I made a tutorial video for a “Last Minute Christmas pop up card” It can be found on youtube under the following link:

The template is also free. It can be found here:
http://www.peterdahmen.de/pd_papierdesign.html#star

W: What inspires you most in life?

Everything can be inspirational. It is difficult to say, were my ideas come from.

W: Finally, what are your plans for the future?

Since I published my first pop up sculptures on youtube – in the year 2010, which is not very long ago – I received very much interest from people all over the world. I have ever expected before, that so many people would like my artworks. I am very thankful for this positive response and I would be very happy, if this interest would also continue in the future.

In the past years, I received orders for wonderful projects, which were more phantastic, than I had ever imagined before. E.g. the creation of the probably largest pop up card in the world (for BMW / MINI), or the collaboration with the ”virtual magician” Marco Tempest. I would be very happy, if I could receive some new projects like these in the future.

W: In croatian theatres, viewers can see your latest film “Projekcije”. What makes this film distinctive and how idea about this project came to you?

Actually, I do not speak often about it but I would like to single out one thing, and I think it is not irrelevant: all my previous films were dramas. This film could be defined as a comedy-drama. It is, I think, very passable, communicative, often witty and easy to follow film. My films have received a praise, but sometimes qualifications like “serious”, “intellectual”, “highly artistic” may came as burden. Of course, it is not that bad, but I really do not make films that any viewer could watch and understand. I imagine that my films are like layered sandwiches, someone in that sandwich can recognize more and someone else less flavour, but everyone can find something for themselves.
I have received script for this film, more than two years ago. In this world of psychiatrists, who have showed in this film only as a paradigmatic group, which means that any other group in this form can be recognized. I can related with and recognized some of their interests, frustration, anguish so I found fertile ground in myself and I engaged in this creative adventure.

W: In the highly commercialized films technology (3D) takes precedence over the story. Does film abandon their hard-won artistic roots and is it turning to visual experience as the sole purpose of existence?

It is true, more and more films considerably seeks to “captivate” with effects and surprises. Like everything else, film, broadly speaking, reflect the times in which we live. There is no doubt, films are much more shallow than in some previous times, and the amount of superficial content in various ways, including film, are far much greater. Fortunately, the flowers did not cease to grow, so we can found it today, rarely indeed. In the films, also.

W: Directorial job is classified, by the general perception, as the creative profession. But in the whole, this is process which is formed from various stages and also implies excellent organizational skills. In which part of the process of filming your creative part can be most prominent, when you feel totally free to create?

I can find the greatest pleasure in a montage. Assuming that the most delicate and the most stressful part of filmmaking, recording, is done as I imagined, montage becomes pure pleasure. So much, that I come eager and excited to film editing terms even full hour earlier. I feel sorrow whenever the montage of the film coming to a end. I could easily sleep in the montage room.

W: Can we find, in today Europe, strong directors as they were Truffaut, Fellini, Bergman and many others. Is there any director who is currently setting new standards in the film, and he is not known as some other acclaimed blockbuster directors?

Of course there are great directors who are not only great artists, but I dare to say, they are also a great thinkers, like Haneke and Von Trier, for example. There are a number of major directors in the small cinemas, with only one fact that goes in their disadvantage, that they come from small countries and they are less noticeable. There are almost everywhere.

W: Does the lack of funding, blocks creativity or maybe opposite?

Money has never made ”a good movie”. Recipe for quality is not in the cash but in the vision and creative power of film authors. However, it is clear that a painter without quality color can not make a quality image and thus in the emergence of the film you have some standards and cost that you can not ignore it.

W: In your view, what a characteristics must a good director have?

First of all he must know himself very well, without a distorted vision of himself. Everything comes from us. If we are fake, what we create will be fake also. There is so many films that vividly confirms it. The filmmaker can not hide behind their own film. Each of our film, so clearly illustrates, bares authors to the bones, that sometimes is very painful for filmmakers. If you want to your creation be a genuine and authentic, you must do it without a priori need to be liked by someone.

W: Can you compare today’s way of studying with yours student days, and which professor had the most influence on you?

One thing is always the same – for students to study at the Academy is prolific as much as they want it. The more you seek from yours professors, more you will get. That was the case when I studied. I think I was just one of those students, like louse, but in the positive way. I like to explore the most hidden corners of the my mentors and teachers mind, especially professors Babaja and Golik, to pull out the best of them. And I succeed.

W: How did you find your style of work? Did you by creating a variety of movies changed your philosophy and approach?

I do not think about style as something that would define me. Honestly, I’m not inclined by authors who “direct style”. I regularly direct the content and style is the result of mine creation. And this result has never been the same. I hope that style of my films are not similar to each other.

W: Which director do you value most and why?

Krzysztof Kieslowski. I can recognize myself in him. We have completely identical spiritual point of view and even the same sense of style.

W: Your job requires lots of travelling? Which country and people have left the deepest impression on you?

I think Israel … And when I say that I know that I am one among many others who are truly fascinated by this country, by its historical and spiritual heritage.

W: And finally … how you like to spend your spare time? How do you relax? Do you love to read, maybe cook or simply you just let your mind free in the long walks?

My regular daily routine implies five kilometres on the hill trails in fast walking pace, and every Saturday or Sunday climb on Sljeme. That is something I never miss. Reading literature is the natural environment of any serious filmmaker and without it there would not be my movies.

We spoke with Eduardo Ferreira, world renowned professional make-up artist.

Eduardo Ferreira is a world renowned professional makeup artist, and also the Director of Artistry & Education for EMEA region and the right hand of the famous make-up artist Bobbi Brown. Eduardo have some credit in expansion of Bobbi philosophy of education and teaching techniques with customers, make-up artists and the media. His talent stands out in every woman’s natural beauty and because of it, he is a favorite make-up artist to the world of editors and celebrities and the ordinary women.
At this year’s New York Fashion Week together with Bobbi Brown created the looks for the show by famous designers, like Cynthia Rowley, Halston, J.Mendel and Tory Burch. You can read below what we all discovered about himself…

W: How did your career start in the world of beauty? Can you tell us some interesting facts about the house where Bobbi Brown currently and where you are a Director of Artistry & Education?

After being a good student I went to the university to study Economy and then I worked in banking and finance during 10 years. At the beginning it was exciting as any newness, but then I realised that I needed more, but what? I had a good job! Then the best thing happen in my life: I have this car crash and against all expectations I SURVIVED! Obviously when you go thru this experience you question yourself about what you have done so far? what have you missed? and, what you would do differently if starting all over again? It took me two years to take my face back as it was destroyed and I decided to start all over again when I was 36 and decided to become a Makeup Artist. I always loved colours, my hobby was painting and I was attracted by the fashion industry. I started from scratch. People and family thought I was out of my mind and they were not at all supportive but I decided to keep on moving on my “crazy change”. By coincidence I met in Lisbon a very charismatic lady that happened to be Clinique Brand Manager, now one of my best Friends (she is 75) in Portugal that believed that an opportunity should be done to this guy. I never thought about the beauty industry or working for a company, but I thought it would be a good way to start. That is how I got into the Estee Lauder Companies. I stayed 1 year in Clinique, then I was invited by MAC and at the same time I was freelancing on my time off. I was literally working 7 days a week every week! I found I had talent, I became known in Portugal at the same time that Bobbi opens in Portugal 11 years ago and I am invited to take care of Education and being the spokes person, and guys I love to talk!! then I get my own segment on TV where during 2 years I was teaching makeup tips at the same time I met Bobbi and I start doing International. Since 8 years I am the Director of Artistry and Education for EMEA travelling every week to different countries within the EMEA Region. I am happy I did that change following my instinct and believing it is never late to change.

W: Who has inspired you in your life and that they help you in your career? Which human characteristic do you value the most?

Bobbi herself is my biggest inspiration in the sense that her success is based on strong believes, hard work, consistency and honesty. When she went to New York after finishing school she did not know anybody in the industry, look at where is she now!

W: What would be the most memorable moment you’ve had while makeup a celebrity?

I work with celebrities and real people. To be very honest I do not make any difference. It is great to make a contribution for people to like themselves more the way they are. I love the type: “I love my winkles, I look great because I feel great and because I look like myself”. These are the people I feel connected with.

W: Do you do makeup for wedding and what is needed for the bride with regard to photographing an evening party?

Oh yes! I did lots of weddings when in Portugal before I got my present position. It is all about looking at your best. Some tips: Natural is not washed out so will be more intense than in your normal days. Do not use browns or oranges on lips and cheeks as they might look moody and make you look tired, roses and pinks will make you look fresh and happy. Eyes are defined with classic eye liners or soft smokey eye. Defined eye brows and flawless skin wearing makeup without looking like. Avoid shimmers as they do not look good on pictures. Use long wear formulas and remember, be yourself!

W: What is best part in your work, and what is the hardest? Do you prefer to make up for film, photography or fashion show?

Starting from the end of the question I love both photo shootings and fashion shows but I also love to teach. Cinema requires long periods that my agenda wouldn’t allow. But what I love about my job is that diversity of activities, people and locals which is everything but boring making an easy life to love. What is challenging? To adapt to every different culture I deal with is very challenging but super exciting.

W: How would you describe your style and what sets it apart from other makeup artists? Do you feel that you have achieved all your goals as a successful makeup artist?

It is never done! I do not think I am amazing. I am just challenging myself to do things better and better. In this job when you think you are great it means that you are out, because thinking you are great makes you stop being open to learn and believe me, I learn every day and that is what make me move! About my style, quoting Bobbi, “any that looks pretty”. I do not like trashy makeup style that makes women hiding their beauty. Whatever you do has to look pretty and being elegant.

W: Do you plan to write a book about makeup? Can you recommend to any book about make-up?

Anything can happen but writing a book is not on my short term plans. Best book in makeup “Makeup Manual” from Bobbi Brown.

W: What are the common mistakes that women make when choosing makeup or at the very make-up?

Trying to look like somebody else. Trying to correct instead of to enhance best features. And I am not a big fan of contouring, it never look not painted.

W: What are your favorite products? What is your advice to every woman in facial skin care?

Favourite product: Concealer. About Skincare, hydration is the best way to look fresh and healthy. Be careful with matte and oil fee formulas if your skin is not oily.

W: Which three products at you every woman must have in her purse?

Mascara, Lip Gloss or Lipstick and Blush.

W: How do you prefer to spend your free time?

Walking in the cities I visit; sit on a terrace and getting inspired by passing byes; going out and meeting new people; going to the beach and reading about history.

W: Do you have any tips for men about corrective makeup?

Like women skincare should be key for any man. I use cleanser, tonic, serum, eye cream and face cream. Of course you need to add a good Shaving Foam. I also do Scrub. If you can look good, why not?! About makeup, a Tinted Moisturizer, bronzing powder and Lip Balm will not hurt and will make you look better. However it has to look you wearing NOTHING.

W: What message do you have for young people who would like to become successful in the business of make-up artists?

Be open to learn every day and never think you know everything.

Zana Markelson together with Leonardo DiCaprio, in the latest film by Martin Scorsese, reveals…

In the latest movie by Martin Scorsese, the “Wolf of Wall Street” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill and Matthew McConaughey, there is a respected Croatian actress Zana Markelson, who gave us an exclusive interview for Wish.Hr, answering the questions about her life and about the movie.

Zana Markelson has built her career on a number of small, yet large and notable roles in the great and esteemed TV series, such as “Frenemies”, “Sekai Gyoten News” and others .
In the latest Scorsese’s movie the “Wolf of Wall Street ” you can see Zana as a sexy flight attendant; the movie started playing in Croatian cinemas, December 26th.

W: You are playing in the latest Scorsese’s movie the “Wolf of Wall Street” with Leonardo DiCaprio who was nominated for a Golden Globe. Will you please describe the felling; how is it to work with the famous film director Martin Scorsese and how did he choose you for that particular role?

Working with the masters such as Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio is something that every actor dreams about. Such a production, an organization, willingness and commitment for acting is a dream for every actor.

My dream started when my agent sent me to an audition for the role of a flight attendant. I went to the audition where they recorded several versions of scenes and a few months after, the agent called me and said that Scorsese looked at it and chose me for the role. This was followed by 15 hours of daily work on the set, with many versions of the scenes.

W: The film has raised a lot of dust around the emotional and passionate scenes? You are in a couple of them with Leonardo Di Caprio, kissing … What do you think about that particular scene and your role in it?

I would not call it a kissing scene but a harassment. The film is based on a true life of Jordan Belfort, who lived an extremely eccentric life, so the entire movie was made in that style .

W: What was your experience working with the other famous actors who were playing in the movie?

In the same scenes are Jonah Hill and P. J. Byrne, who are brilliant actors. All together they created a magical world in which it was easy to fit in. in.

W: You were born in Croatia, in the ancient city of Dubrovnik. Where did you go to school, where did you graduate, and what binds you to that period of life?

Dubrovnik is my hometown and it’s something that remains in my heart forever. After Dubrovnik high school, I studied art with prof., Miroslav Šutej, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb.

W: What has led you from artistic expression to acting? Do you still paint and do the fine arts, regardless of your success in the world of acting?

Four years ago I worked on a movie set and fell in love with this art at the first glance. It was something refreshing. It is an art in collaboration with other people, an art that allows direct expression. Numerous schools and lessons followed. At that point, I stopped painting and my artistic focus shifted to creating characters in acting. It feels like the same process for me, imaginative creation of the character and the circumstances surroundings.

W: At one time you went to America. How did it happen?

I went to America, because I met my American husband, who was a good friend of one of my friends. After some time of traveling between Dubrovnik and New York, we realized that someone has to move somewhere. And that was me. So, I moved to New York.

W: Where did you learn acting; who was your acting teacher in America? How did you feel about your first lessons? What acting school did you go to? Can you name some prominent actors who have finished the same school?

I started at the Actors Conservatory, which is led by Lily Lodge, who played and worked with the renowned Lee Strasberg. Among the others, Alec Baldwin and Brooke Shields have been in the same school. It wasn’ t an easy time. I had to overcome many barriers; the language, the opening of personality, voice, creating the character and realistic circumstances. I studied improvisation at UCB Theatre also various voice, language and other lessons followed.

W: Are these schools expensive and what are the requirements for someone to be admitted?

These schools are attended by many students, but only a few of those are able to continue to explore the art, only those with a commitment, and I think that is where the secret lies, the secret of creating a true artist. Many students give up when it comes the time to move the barrier, which is actually a moment when you learn the most. I think there is no problem to enter these schools, but it is up to the student and his willingness to explore, do one’s homework and work on it, that leads you to further success.

W: You have attended the acting exercises where Alec Baldwin was a reviewer. What was the feeling to act in front of him?

Alec Baldwin attended the presentation of one of the scenes and it was very effective and instructive to hear his comments, suggestions and jokes. You can definitely learn a lot by analyzing the scene, especially by someone like Alec, who has been through all that and became a top actor.

W: Where and how do you live these days and what is Croatia’s perspective regarding art and life in general in Croatia itself?

I live in New York with my family. I think the world of acting has no boundaries. The whole world is now connected and very open, where the professionals are recognized everywhere. I think if someone truly loves what he does and is committed to what he does, the door will open and they will thrive.

W: You have two beautiful children. You live with your family in America. Are you happy and what is your opinion on life in America?

I live in New York and absolutely love it. Life in America, as everywhere, has its ups and downs. It requires a lot of work wherever you live. In Croatia, there are certainly less opportunities, and in America competition is extremely high, so the medal always has two sides. I live here with my two beautiful children and my husband, and as of a further step in my future, it remains to be seen.

W: Do you ever feel homesick for Croatia, do you come to visit? Do you ever cook any Croatian specialties to your family or friends?

I come to Croatia every year. I am bonded by my roots to Croatia, and personally this is what makes me complete. As for the kitchen, sometimes I do make some of our specialties, but all the skills remained in the delicacies that my mom and grandma prepared. I’d rather keep with my art.

We bring you interview with the amazing make-up artist Shawn Town.

Shawn Towne is a global educator for Iredale Mineral Cosmetics, the first makeup that is actually good for the skin. He is working as a makeup artist for over 26 years and through his business he worked with celebrities as Luke Wilson and Eartha Kitt. His amazing work can be found in fashion magazines, runway shows, televisions commercials etc.

In this interview he will reveal to us about his challenges in life and his favorite and worse part of his job.

W: Why did you choose this particular profession? When did you know that this career is created just for you?

I grew up with a very beautiful Grandmother who never left the house without a full face of makeup and a Mother who loved dramatic makeup. I was always fascinated to watch them do their own makeup and I spent most of my teenage years doing makeup on all of my friends. I knew by the time I graduated from high school that this was what I wanted to do. I’ve never done anything else.

W: What was your first job and what has been the biggest challenge you faced in your career?

My first job as a makeup artist was with a modeling agency in San Antonio, Texas. I did makeup for composite or zed cards for models. Being young and inexperienced I didn’t really understand the natural look so I put red lipstick and black eyeliner on everybody. The biggest challenge I ever faced was learning to give up what I wanted to create and do what the photographer or art director wanted me to do. That seems to be a common challenge for young makeup artists because we are visionaries. We want to create our own style but sometimes the required style looks nothing like what we want. Thus our listening skills and ability to conform are very valuable.

W: What was the best advice that you get from another professional makeup artist?

I’ve been very blessed to have been mentored by many amazing artists and I’ve gotten so many jewels of advice over the years so I can’t choose one but some key pieces are:
i. Never go too heavy on foundation and always blend well. A smooth natural looking complexion is the basis of all beauty.
ii. Choose carefully the tools you use. One wrong brush can mean the difference between blended and messy.
iii. Always have good lighting. An illuminated face is your best pallet to work on.

W: How long does it take for a person to become a professional makeup artist?

a. There is no standard. I meet so many talented artists that never get the opportunity to work as professionals and I’ve met many professionals who shouldn’t be called professionals. Unfortunately it is still about who you know and about being in the right place at the right time. My advice to anyone who wants to be a professional is to take as many pictures of your work as possible and keep a portfolio to show. Have a website or a facebook page. Always document your work so potential clients and employers can see your talent.

W: What techniques and preparative cosmetics do you use during the make-up?

Primers are such a important part of good makeup. They smooth the texture of the skin and create a polymer that makeup will adhere to. Many of them even have skincare benefits. My favorite is Smooth Affair Primer by jane iredale.

W: Which information should stylist share with his client? What advice do you often give to clients when they come to the salon?

Full disclosure and nothing less is my standpoint. We do the entire application with the client facing the mirror from start to finish. We invite to client to ask as many questions as she wants and we review the process with her at the end. I teach all the artists I meet to chart what they have done on a diagram that the client can take home with them. There is nothing more frustrating to a client than to get home with a bag full of makeup products that she doesn’t know how to use. It is our responsibility to teach them how to recreate the look we have given them.

W: You live and work in the United States. What are the criteria for women in America when it comes to makeup, and what for women in Europe?

Well the criteria are constantly changing. Decades ago, women were concerned with nothing less than luster, texture and coverage. Today there’s a deeper, more evolved understanding of makeup and what it can do. Skincare and makeup are now hybrid products and sun protection has become higher priority than ever before. And while a consumer of the 1990s may have been satisfied with long lasting coverage and smooth consistency, the latest generation of consumers isn’t all that impressed unless you can do it without adding synthetic preservatives, fragrances, petroleum and dyes. And don’t forget that women of today, both American and European want skincare benefits such as anti-oxidant protection, vitamins and certified organic botanicals.

W: Who are some of your most favorite clients so far?

Well I owe a debt of gratitude to Mariel Hemmingway who allowed me to do her makeup for a magazine editorial back in 1997. She was very kind to me and her picture in my portfolio was my first celebrity image, which got me a lot of work in the following years. But I must say that the most life changing influence in my career has been Jane Iredale herself. She isn’t a client; she is the owner of the company I work for. I’ve had the honor of knowing her personally for over 6 years. I was introduced to her products back in 2003 and since then, I’ve never wanted to use anything else. Through example, she is changing the world’s standards of makeup. Her transparency, her vision and her humanitarianism have inspired me in more ways than I can possibly name.

W: What’s the best and worst part of your job?

The best part of my job is knowing that I play a valuable role in such a wonderful organization. I get to teach professionals how to create beauty with products that don’t hurt people, animals or the environment. I get to travel the world and meet others who share Jane’s vision. I can’t think of anything I would enjoy more. The worst part of my job is trying to eat healthy on the road. Sometimes you just can’t find a kale salad or almond milk smoothie when you want one.

W: What three makeup item should no woman leave home without?

a. A good mineral powder like PurePressed Base for touch ups and sun protection.
b. A hydrating lip product such as PureMoist Lip Color. Remember a good lip color can be used on the lips, cheeks and even eyes.
c. A soft eye defining pencil, preferably not too dark so that it can be used on the eyes, brows and smudged into the corner or crease for a shadow.

We bring you an exclusive interview with Aaron Simpson, co-founder and executive chairman of the Quintessentially Group.

After graduating from the University of Oxford, Aaron Simpson enjoyed a glorious career in film production; he initially worked for Scala and Rocket Pictures, and then he set up his own production company, Flashlight Films. Aaron was an instrumental figure in the Q Foundation – the organization dedicated to supporting charities around the world.

His strong entrepreneurial spirit has been the driving force in the enterprise and establishing Quintessentially, as a global company, and today it is an influential British brand with offices in more than 65 cities around the world.

Aaron is the chief executive officer for more than 32 companies that have grown into a portfolio of businesses that cover every aspect of a luxurious lifestyle with a growing presence around the world. Aaron is a consultant and board member of several private companies, such as The Entrepreneurs Exchange, Non-Executive Director of the Moon Ltd. – 3D Virtual World 365, Non-Executive Director Idris Ltd. – Investment fund for entrepreneurial ideas and a number of other tasks that he privately own.

Aaron is happily married man and lives with his wife in London and Ibiza.

W: What makes Quintessentially so special?

We are the leading international luxury lifestyle company, which launched in 2000 as a small London based concierge service, but we have experienced a complete transformation in a decade and currently have offices in over 60 countries around the world.

The service we provide to our discerning and high net worth Members, including corporate accounts, is proactive and personalized, catering to every member’s needs, from last minute restaurant bookings, travel arrangements, and access to private parties, as well as fulfilling every unusual request and successfully connecting businesses all over the world.

Quintessentially Lifestyle can offer access to the inaccessible and can make the seemingly impossible, possible.

W: How did you come up with the idea of providing such a personalized and exclusive service?

It was conceived as a luxury concierge service for friends based either in / around London or for those who frequented London and didn’t have a PA or friend to gain them access to the capital’s sought after venues.

A few years ago when we wanted to expand to become a luxury lifestyle group, we decided we would not outsource any services and would take direct control in order to ensure the best standards.

We focused on finding the leading authorities in every luxury field. So far we have over 32 sister businesses covering everything to do with luxury including travel, wine, art, personal shopping, private aviation and public relations. Last year we launched a recruitment section, Quintessentially People, to find the right individuals to meet some clients’ challenging staffing needs, from PAs and personal chefs to accountants.

W: What were the most demanding wishes of clients, that you made?

No demand is too big or too small! Over the years we have had some truly amazing requests from our members, which is a testament to their varied imagination!

We’ve closed the Sydney Harbour Bridge for a member to propose at the top of it, we’ve organised a romantic dinner on an iceberg, we’ve sourced the world’s most expensive bottle of wine, we’ve created a drive-in style batman cave in a member’s house.

We’ve also arranged some amazing adventures for members wanting to see tombs in Egypt that aren’t open to the public, or to trek across Tibet and have dinner with the Dalai Lama – I’m constantly impressed by what the team can do and the amazing service they provide.

W: Which is the easiest way to become a member and the requirements for membership?

The easiest way to become a member is to apply on-line at www.quintessentially.com by filling in the ‘Join Us’ form. We will then look at your application and contact you directly.

Quintessentially also, like any club, attracts members through word of mouth and referral. As we gather momentum, we anticipate a large number of unsolicited approaches.

W: Do you receive more exclusive demands from the east or the west?

I would say currently more from the East; recently we sent Balik Salmon to India, caviar to Hong Kong, sent Chinese food from China Town to Thailand and 500 macaroons from Ladurée in London all the way to Singapore.

W: Can you give us insight into look of your working day?

My working life hasn’t changed too much since I started although I don’t travel as much as I used to but that’s to be expected when you’ve been running a business for over 12 years.

My day is filled with lots of meeting – meeting corporate clients, members, new business prospects, touching base with the various sister businesses in the Quintessentially Group that I manage etc.

No day is the same which keeps it fresh and exciting – I’ll always be meeting someone new and interesting. I have to attend many events as part of my role, various award ceremonies, dinners and launch events. It’s important to me to keep abreast of all that goes on in the world of Quintessentially.

W: Who is the most interesting person, that you know, in your life and why?

Most interesting is very difficult to define. Most interesting because she is fascinating to me, is my daughter Sophia. I can, and do watch her for hours as she discovers everything new in her life.
It’s an amazing time and one I cherish. Although I could do without the 4am wake up calls sometimes!

W: How does good fun look from the perspective of people like yourself?

Fun to me is new experiences, travel, the chance to meet unique and interesting people and companies, all of which I get through working at Quintessentially. Experiences are key – whether it’s discovering a new city with some insider guidance from the local Quintessentially team, or learning a new skill – I recently took part in a skydive for the Quintessentially Foundation which was amazing!

I enjoy the people I work with, and spending time with family and friends and I love living in London – there’s something new and fun to see everywhere you look and I’m constantly trying the latest restaurant or theatre opening.

W: Do you have queries which include Croatia and what then do you recommend?

Yes. If it is a Q Adriatic member who already knows alot about the best destinations and spots we do have secret gems up our sleeves. For example, small family run restaurants on inaccessible parts on one of over 1000 islands, offering fresh fish caught the very same day and hidden wine cellars.

Also we often arrange one-off bespoke experiences such as truffle hunting with an expert in the woods of Istria. If it’s a Q International member visiting Croatia for the first time, we offer the flagship destinations on the Ddriatic sea; Dubrovnik, Hvar and Istria, where we have the capacities and quality Quintessentially members are used to.

It is not just the sun and beaches that Croatia has to offer but also untouched Mediteranean landscape. Relaxing in a high end resort on the Dalmatian coast, watching the sea flora and fauna while strolling the lungo mare, realizing that this might be the clearest sea you’ve ever seen.

You can sail for days along the coast, each day discovering a new and even more beautifull bay, and feel the Mediterenean as it once was. Q Adriatic can be your personal guide, always ready to provide the best service and offer localised, insider recommendations ensuring you experience something that little bit more unique.

W: Which event was total surprise for you (in the good way)?

Launching the luxury shopping mall, Esentai Mall, in Almaty Kazakhstan was one of the most challenging yet highly rewarding jobs Quintessentially has ever worked on.

Working within such a different culture had a range of surprises in store but the Quintessentially Events team managed this with flying colours, ultimately creating a memorable, wow factor luxury event widely publicised around the world.

W: What is your current challenge in life?

Finding enough time in the working day to fulfil everything I need to. London is so fast paced and it is a constant battle to find enough hours in the day to get everything done, balanced with a satisfying social life, which is why a service like Quintessentially can really help time poor individuals.

We bring you an exclusive interview with the director of Quintessentially Education, Oliver Joyce.

Quintessentially education with dedicated and very highly classified professionals, offers the best possible academic start for your children. They will guide and help you, so you can reach the best decisions.

Oliver Joyce is responsible figure Quintessentially Education – an organization that reliably provides the best solutions for the education of your children.

What he told us about the fundamental philosophy Quintessentially education and education in developing countries, read in follow-up interview.

W: In order to represent you and your work to our readers, can you begin with introducing yourself and introducing Quintessentially Education?

My name’s Oliver Joyce and I’m Director of New Business at the Quintessentially Group. Quintessentially Education is an educational consultancy business helping source the best tutors and helping children attain places in the best schools and universities around the world.

W: Is there a basic philosophy of Quintessentially Education and, if so, can you tell us about it?

The philosophy is to find an education for a child that meets their abilities, their aspirations and the aspirations of the parents. These things aren’t always the same thing so it’s sometimes easier said than done!

W: Who are educational consultants and how they help and promote successful learning and education in general?

Educational consultants all have different stories and strengths but all have a strong academic record and comprehensive understanding of the area of education which they work in. They help by being experienced – having seen what works best in the past helps them identify what will work best for our new clients. They will spot strengths and foresee problems that the untrained eye simply wouldn’t detect.

W: Where and with which schools and universities do you collaborate? Whom are you planning to include in the future to the educational institutions of Quintessentially program?

We work with a wide range of schools and universities but we actually approach the industry from the opposite position. We start with the child and from assessing them we develop a long list of potential schools. Then starts the process of discussing the schools with the parents, explaining the schools to the child, conducting tours of the schools and introducing the child and parents to key members of staff at the schools. From there, we whittle that list down to just a few options.

The most famous schools in the world are often mentioned by parents in their first meeting with us. But more times than not, there are misconceptions held about these schools and the parents often realise that these schools won’t necessarily suit their child and they end up choosing somewhere else.

We once had a parent who wanted to send their daughter to Eton College because they had heard it was the best school in the UK. They were very surprised to learn it was a boys only school!

W: What do you think about education in the developed world, the West, and about education in some less developed countries? What is your view on education in Croatia?

The best education is not always to be found in developed countries and developing countries sometimes offer very high standards of education. Quality education is usually based on the esteem with which it has been held over the years and often centuries.

The education system of Croatia is not well known in the UK currently but from what I have read, significant investments are being made and with time and good strategy, I have no doubt Croatia can climb the ranks of quality in global education.

W: How do you achieve the trust of parents and children about the best decision of education, through your advice?

Trust is earned. The parent must have faith that the expert they are speaking to is an authority on what they are advising. It’s not just their qualifications and experience (although these play a huge role) but also their willingness to listen and adapt their advice to each child. A consultant who dictates to parents and their children has failed to provide good advice.

W: What about the children who have special needs. Do you have a special programs for them?

Providing quality education for children with special needs is a huge growth area. Historically, children with special needs were ignored or simply assumed not to be bright. More recently, the children were segregated and not permitted to be as ambitious as their peers. Now, the focus is very much on children with special needs being provided the right environs to fullfil their potential. As a education consultant, there’s a huge amount of assitance that can be provided here as each child has specific requirements.

W: Tell us a little bit about the guardianship. What are the requirements that a person should fulfill in order to become a guardian?

Guardians play a variety of roles but most often, they act in some parental capacities for children living away from home. At the very beginning they undergo very basic checks (such as attaining a criminal records bureau certficate) and an assessment of their experience. But critically, it’s very much about finding a guaridan with whom the child feels comfortable and can be supported by. It’s more of an art than a science.

W: Has work in Quintessentially affected you and what has changed in your life?

It has taught me a lot! An education in itself!

W: In your opinion which are the Top 3 books you’ve read so far, and what would you recommend to young people?

The best novel i’ve read is Day of the Jackal by Fredrick Forsyth. The best history book is A People’s Tragedy by Orlando Figes. The best autobiography is between Losing my Virginity by Richard Branson and Dear Me by Peter Ustinov.

I would reccommend to a child to read only things you enjoy. You don’t need to read classic texts early in life. If you try and read something difficult too early, it could put you off reading for life. Better a child loves reading and reads great texts later in their life than reads nothing at all.

W: As a conclusion to the interview, can You share with us Your life motto?

I don’t have a life motto per se but I love Carl Sagan’s view of the world. He once said “somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known“ which really strikes a chord.
