Winter Sports Destinations

Autumn might have only just graced us with its presence, but it is never too early to start thinking about the next escape, and for many of us that means heading for the pistes and powder. Whether you prefer the European classics, the adventure of heli-skiing in the North American wilds, or swooshing down a slope a little closer to home, here’s a selection of some of the most luxurious winter sports destinations around the world.

JAPAN

KASARA NISEKO VILLAGE TOWNHOUSES
Scheduled to open at the beginning of December, the Kasara Niseko Village Townhouses will introduce a new class of luxury property to “the snowiest ski resort in the world”. Located at the base of Mount Niseko Annupuri on Hokkaido, the townhouses form part of YTL Hotels’ newest brand, Kasara, which has been built from the DNA of luxury and adventure, and make up the first phase of what will become Niseko Village. Expect European levels of luxury complete with clean Japanese design elements in each of the three-bedroom ski-in/ski-out residences, as well as exclusive first access to the ski runs in the mornings and the opportunity to learn mountain orientation from a specially assigned local expert.

AUSTRIA

THE CHALET AT 11° EAST
Situated in Obergurgl, one of Europe’s highest ski resorts and Austria’s most snow-sure, The Chalet at 11° East is arguably the most luxurious property in the vicinity. It is British-owned and British-run, sleeps up to 12 and boasts simply stunning contemporary interiors that welcome you in like a home away from home. Located right on the piste, the chalet is ski-in/ski-out and also right next door to a children’s ski school, meaning that you can watch your little ones revelling in the snow from the comfort of the chalet’s very own bar.

FRANCE

L’APOGÉE COURCHEVEL
Courchevel 1850’s newest resort first opened its doors at the beginning of December 2013 and made a suitable impression on discerning skiers throughout its first season. Located in the charming Jardin Alpin area of Courchevel, L’Apogée enjoys ski-in/ski-out access to the resort’s highest slopes, occupying as it does one of the topmost areas. Interiors are chic and suites are spacious, but the pièce de résistance has to be the spectacular four-bedroom Penthouse, which enjoys spectacular views across Les Trois Vallées, and one of the best resorts in the whole of France.

ALASKA

ALYESKA RESORT-BASED HELI SKIING
While this might not be one for the beginners, it certainly makes for one of the most memorable skiing adventures you will ever experience. Far off the beaten track, nestled in the northern wilds of Alaska, lays Alyeska Resort, one of the best properties in the entire snowy state. Not only does Alyeska offer direct access to Alaska’s spectacular Chugach range, it also enjoys a unique relationship with the definitive Alaskan heli-ski operator, Chugach Powder Guides, who can offer auspicious skiers up to 20,000 feet of vertical in a day, not to mention views that are simply out of this world.

CANADA

THE FAIRMOUNT CHATEAU WHISTLER
It is the landmark hotel of Canada’s signature ski resort; it can only be The Fairmount Chateau Whistler. Nestled at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, it offers ski-in/ski-out access to the slopes, something often considered a luxury at North American resorts, as well as classic elegance and excellent amenities. Ski-wise, Whistler is an excellent all rounder, offering something for everyone from beginners to experts, as well as plenty to occupy anyone that doesn’t fancy hitting the slopes every day.
