Scotland extends over about 78 thousand square kilometers in the northern part of the island of Great Britain, and to it belong the islands Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland. On land it borders with England and Wales, which along with Northern Ireland form the United Kingdom. It also has access to the Atlantic Ocean and North Sea.

In terms of relief Scotland is divided into three sections: the southern part through which the south Highlands extend, the central part which is dominated with depression, and the northern part, which occupies the Scottish Highlands, and which passes into the coastal plain.

It has little more than 5 million inhabitants, and most of them are settled in the political, cultural and industrial center of the country – Edinburgh. The town is situated in the Gulf of Forth in the east, and it is an unavoidable tourist destination for every tourist.

Because of the proximity of the North Pole and low temperatures throughout the year Scottish cuisine is extremely rich in fat. Meat dishes here are made from sheep – as well as salmon, cod and various kinds of vegetables and potatoes. The national dish-haggis – is made of chopped lamb liver, lungs and heart, which are mixed with oatmeal, and baked in the shell of the same gastric animals. Of course, this specialty only the bravest will try. Food is served with tea, beer and unavoidable whiskey – for which they are known throughout the world.

Edinburgh

Explore the capital of Scotland! Visit the old part of town which is under the protection of UNESCO and visit Edinburgh Castle built on top of the extinct volcano, the Cathedral of St. Giles and the Palace Court. Head out to the new part of town, which dates back to the 18th century, and boasts a number of neo-classical buildings. It offers a range of museums, galleries and theaters.

The lake monster

A visit to Loch Ness near Inverness is a favorite tourist attraction of north Scotland. Responsible culprit is the lake monster Nessie, who reportedly lives in its depths. It is assumed that the mythical creature has a small head, long neck, a few coats of arms on the body and a large tail, and is around 10 meters long. Material evidence, unfortunately, is still lacking.

Glasgow

The largest city of Scotland – Glasgow – is situated on the River Clyde in the central part of the country. The most important monument of the city is the cathedral from the 13th century. Walk along the Clyde Arc bridge, go into one of the largest public libraries Europe Mitchell, watch the Glasgow Rangers and Glasgow Celtic derby, and visit the distillery Glengoyone and discover how the famous whiskey is made.

Scottish wildlife

Discover the stunning wilderness of Scots! Visit the National Park Loch Lomond and Trossach in the central part of the country, as well as the National Park Cairnogorms which occupies part of the Scottish highlands. At your disposal there are a number of activities: fishing in the Scottish lakes, rafting on the rivers, golf, climbing the surrounding mountains, and the exploration of characteristic flora and fauna.

Island wonders

Hebrides, Shetland and Orknei are islands which belong to the Scottish archipelago, and they are spread in the far north of the country. Here you can witness a number of traditional crafts, customs and culture. With a little luck you may run into some local festival where men still appear in the kilt. Keep in mind that in this region is very very cold, so make sure you dress appropriate.
